Fire Safety With A Clear Purpose

Helping Bristol’s businesses and property managers understand their fire protection requirements and take a practical next step.

A Building-First Approach

Specific Advice. Useful Next Steps.

Bristol Fire Safety Services helps local premises managers make sense of assessments, equipment and specialist fire protection work. Our focus is the building in front of us, how it is used and the people who rely on its precautions.

We support enquiries from employers, landlords, facilities managers and managing agents. Offices, shops, workshops, hospitality premises and shared buildings each need a scope that reflects their particular use.

We start by asking what prompted the enquiry. An assessment action, a refurbishment and an overdue maintenance visit can need different information and different specialist skills.

Our Working Principles

Clarity Before Commitment.

Define the premises and the problem. Explain what the proposed work includes. Identify what records and follow-up actions are needed.

Where a suitable local firm is needed to respond, we ask for your agreement before passing on your enquiry and contact details. You can review that arrangement in our privacy notice.

Standards & Responsibilities

The Right Scope For The Right Work.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 provides the main framework for workplace fire safety duties in England. The responsible person retains those duties when appointing a contractor or assessor.

Technical standards have specific purposes. BS 5839-1:2025 covers non-domestic fire alarm systems, BS 5306-3 covers portable extinguisher maintenance and the BS EN 15004 series relates to gaseous extinguishing systems.

Know What You Are Appointing.

Competence needs to match the particular service and building. Ask any proposed contractor for evidence relevant to the work, including the scope of any third-party certification they claim.

An inspection, a design and a repair are different appointments. A useful proposal identifies these boundaries and explains any limits caused by access, missing records or the need for further investigation.
